Description of the Syosset Branch

AYLUS, or the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States, is a student-run non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of communities across the country. AYLUS is a PVSA (Presidential Volunteer Service Award) Certifying Organization and can help its members apply for PVSA Gold, Silver, and Bronze service medals.

The Syosset branch of AYLUS was founded after the founders had each explored multiple avenues of contribution to the communities combating repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic in recent months. Our branch has a total of 60 members at its second anniversary.

Our branch is driven to promote civic engagement, environmental protection, and community cohesion through a wide range of volunteer projects that enrich our community. With membership spanning multiple states, AYLUS-Syosset provides each volunteer the opportunity to gain valuable leadership, communication and organizational skills.

Students of all grades are welcome to join AYLUS-Syosset. We hope to expand our horizons by creating more innovative programs, and we need your help! Join us to hone your leadership skills and participate in cultivating a better, more vibrant community. Together, we can make a difference.

Events

Environmental Protection

AYLUS-Syosset has carried out numerous environmental protection programs. In our composting program, volunteers construct and fill compost bins for houses around our community in order to combat the widespread problem of food waste. In another program, we lead clean ups of highly used outdoor areas such as streets, public parks, and beaches to keep the wildlife and general public safe from pollution.

 

 

Civic Engagement

Members of AYLUS Syosset participated in a fight against gun violence alongside the Long Island branch of the organization March For Our Lives, Moms Demand Action, the League of Women Voters and AYLUS Dix Hills in front of the Nassau County Legislature building in Mineola. Members gathered to make signs that detailed quotes and statistics about gun-related tragedies, namely mass and school shootings in America. Prior to the event, members made and printed AYLUS brochures and posters which were then handed out to participants during the march. Many organizations and leaders gave speeches about the importance of spreading awareness about the impact that gun violence has on all communities, especially kids and minorities. Members shared similar sentiments with each other and the other participants about the need to take action to ensure that the community around us remains safe. Sally Jamieson, Trien Song and Dahlia Solomon from the March for Our Lives group gave a speech alongside their group co-sponsor, member of Nassau County Legislature Josh Lafazan. Additionally, pediatrician Dr. Eve Meltzer Krief talks about how difficult it is to hear about the realities of school shootings and how guns have become the number one cause of death for children.

On September 11th, 2023, AYLUS Syosset continued its tradition of visiting and touring the Syosset Fire Department for 9/11 candlelight memorial day. Although the event was planned extremely last-minute, AYLUS members were able to collectively come together to dedicate their Monday night to remembering those lost in the September 11th attacks. Members were given a speech by First Assistant Chief of the Syosset Fire Department Robert Leonard and were able to meet four other members of the board. Syosset Fire Department is dedicated to protecting our local community, showing both compassion and urgency for those in emergencies. The Department also engages in extensive community education, mitigation of fires, first-aid medical care and countless other invaluable services. AYLUS Syosset is extremely grateful to those that dedicate their time to training in their program and of course, those who are full-time firefighters and professionals.

Community Cohesion

To accommodate COVID-era restrictions, AYLUS-Syosset also held a variety of online classes to promote cross-cultural understanding and community cohesion. We taught weekly ESL classes with individualized curriculum and tutors for recent immigrants, and analyzed classics like Journey to the West in weekly Chinese Cultural Appreciation courses. We also hosted Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese cultural exchange exhibitions and programs to cultivate familiarity across a plethora of diverse cultures.

Accomplishment

2023:

On 6/21/2023, members of Aylus Syosset (and some member of Aylus Rosyln, Dix hills and Manhasset) Celebrated  their successes at Manhasset Public Library. AYLUS Syosset volunteers met up with councilwoman Veronica Lurvey of North Hempstead, Town Supervisor Jennifer S. DeSenda of North Hempstead,  Town Councilman Peter J. Zuckerman of North Hempstead and Councilwoman Christine Liu of Manhasset to receive volunteer awards. The supervisors and council members along with the parent advisors of AYLUS Manhasset (Gracie Chen) and AYLUS Syosset (Francina Liu).

2021:

We are delighted to announce that AYLUS Syosset as an organization and its board members individually (Alan Huang, Leo Cheng, Jasmine Chen and Ryan Leung) were presented with Nassau County Legislature Citations from Josh Lafazan for outstanding service and commitment to the local community at the YFCA Back To School Drive on 8/7/21.

We are delighted to announce that AYLUS Syosset members (Alan Huang, Leo Cheng, Jasmine Chen and Ryan Leung) received Certificate of Appreciation from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran for being recognized with the President’s Volunteer Service Award on 8/30/2021.
