AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (8/1/2021, #46)

On 8/1/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS (Emily Lin, Leo Cheng, John Thach, and Aika Siuzu) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).

Tutors Leo Cheng and Emily Lin finished the progress check and moved on to teach many listening, reading and writing exercises in Unit 5. Pronunciation was also worked on with tutor Leo Cheng explaining why stress of a word is important. Unit 5 contained exercises and information that related to different cultures so new types of chinese culture were brought up. Local customs were examined of different areas like the US, China, Russia, etc.

Student tutor John Thach taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, a discussion about various career interests was held. These careers included professions in the health field, such as dentistry and anesthesiology, as well as the required education necessary for those trades. Second on the agenda was the vocabulary list, which was sports/exercise themed. The terms were discussed and students were encouraged to inquire about them. These terms included equestrian and cardiovascular endurance. Afterwards, the students watched a quick video about the physics of running. Lastly, various speaking prompts were provided on a Jamboard, where the students answered questions such as What was your favorite thing to happen to you recently?

The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach (1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours), and Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours).
