AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (11/8/2020, #13)

On 11/8/2020, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang, Emily Lin, Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

The lesson consisted of three parts: Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Reading tutors Emily Lin and Leo Cheng started another short story, “The Egg.” As the students were reading it, we translated some words that they struggled to pronounce, and we also went over some difficult vocabulary in the reading by defining and translating. One class finished reading within 30 minutes, while the other class had to finish reading for homework.

Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the writing portion of AYLUS Syosset’s 13th online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors taught students more about the differences between technical and creative writing. Then, students were given a variety of ambiguous photos and asked to create their own stories and settings based on them. Later, students were, students were led through a vocab sheet based around the topic of “Fall” and practiced pronouncing challenging words. Lastly, students played a game of “what doesn’t belong”, and they had to choose which word didn’t belong to a given theme. The class was instructed in English to immerse the students in an English environment.

Today in class, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang decided to switch the traditional style of lecturing the students in class to allow more participation from students. We read numerous excerpts from previous ELA 6th grade NY state test. Any words that the students had trouble mispronouncing were then thoroughly went over. We also decided to play a game involving the alphabet where the students had to make a sentence starting with the first letter of the alphabet, then the second, and so on. To end off the classes, the students then were allowed to talk about any topic and tried their best to keep a conversation going for at least 30-60 seconds.

The following 4 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours) and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours).
