Syosset Participates In Bethpage State Park Environmental Protection Project, #6 (7/16/22)

On 7/16/22, AYLUS Syosset volunteered at Bethpage State Park to weed out invasive plants such as mugwort and Knapp weed from the Green Acre garden. The native species such as milkweed were left alone. Other invasive plants such as porcelain berry and oriental bittersweet were found in the garden as well as poison ivy. We learned how to identify and avoid poison ivy by its 3 leaves and vine.

Invasive species can be dangerous to an environment because they compete with native plants for limited resources, reducing biodiversity and altering habitats. They have no predators or other factors limiting them like native plants and end up out competing native species.

Members who participate in this event include: Alyssa Huang(3 hours), Skylar Dong(3 hours), Feilei Li(3 hours), Junhao Chen(3 hours), Shengqi Zhang(3 hours), Haoyu Qiu(3 hours), Margaret Zhang(3.5 hours), Alan Huan(3 hours), Guangli Yang and Francina.
