AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (11/29/2020, #16)

On 11/29/2020, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang, Emily Lin, Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

The lesson consisted of three parts: Reading, Writing and Speaking.

In class, tutors Emily Lin and Leo change taught the reading portion of the English class. A new passage in the genre of Greek mythology was introduced. After analyzing the joke, the rest of the class was just reading the reading of the passage.

Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the writing portion of AYLUS Syosset’s ESL Tutoring class. This class, the tutors continued their review of concepts taught from previous weeks, along with covering a new Thanksgiving themed vocabulary list with a quick corresponding history and culture lesson, where the students were encouraged to ask questions relating to the holiday. Following vocabulary review, “Storytime” began, where ambiguous photos were shown to the students who were then asked to create their own stories and settings based on them. Lastly, a game of would you rather was played to further develop English conversational and reasoning skills. The class was instructed in English to immerse the students in an English environment.

Today in class, Alan Huang and Ryan Leung had the students watch two videos and answer questions. The first video was in the set of a 1980’s style radio play, the actors, narrator and background noise maker all are doing well until the background noise maker drops all of her instruments for making noise and is forced to improvise the rest of the sounds with her voice. The other video was a continuation of the same Chinese movie with subtitles from week 11/22/20. Questions this week were tweaked to be more open minded instead of direct(Instead of what did this character do? We asked how did the character feel when they did this?).

The following 6 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours) and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours).
