AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (6/6/2021, #39)

On 6/6/2021, seven members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Alan Huang, Aika Siuzu, Ryan Leung, Jasmine Chen and Greene Xue) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.

In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).

Ryan, Greene and Aika started the first chapter of the Interchange Level 2 textbook today. First, a video was watched about how America is the melting pot of all races, and a bit of background was provided for each race mentioned. Students then answered questions. A brief dialogue about a skating accident was read by the students and questions were answered for comprehension. The main focus of the class was to work on the simple past tense (adding -ed to the end of verbs) and talking about irregular past tense words. Lastly, an article about Gael Garcia Bernal’s directing and acting career was read, true or false questions were then presented for understanding.

Alan, Emily, and Leo finished Unit 2: Working 9 – 5, the progress check and is currently on Unit 3: Lend a hand. The progress check was to use the skills in units 1 & 2 like gerund phrases to increase the student’s knowledge of English. Comparisons and how they are structured in a sentence were presented to students.

Student tutors John Thach and Jasmine Chen taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutor returned back to regular activities including a “Storytime” segment where students are given random images and asked to come up with a scenario, a vocabulary segment and a grammar segment. Students continued practicing their verbal and vocabulary abilities in preparation for units to come.

The following 7 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours),  Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours), Jasmine Chen (1.5 hours), Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) and Greene Xue(1.5 hours).
