On 2/3/24, members of AYLUS Syosset aided in removing invasive plants and vines from the tree line at the main entranceway of the Planting Fields Arboretum. Originally, the entrance pathway for the arboretum was lined with beech trees however those trees were overtaken by invasive plants so the entire path was redone with the beech trees mechanically cleared and one hundred oak trees were planted.
Our group worked on cleaning the fringe of the woods by clearing invasive plants such as English Ivy, briar vines and devil’s walking stick and cutting down the unmarked beech trees. Invasive species are dangerous because they are capable of causing extinctions of native plants and animals, reducing biodiversity, competing with native organisms for limited resources, and altering habitats.
