AYLUS Syosset Initiates an English Learner’s Literature Appreciation Course (4/8/2021, #1)

On 4/8/2021, two members of Syosset AYLUS (Jasmine Chen and John Thach) taught the very first course of a weekly 90 minute class for ESL learners interested in delving into/ analyzing various forms of popular English literature.

After a brief introduction segment, the tutors led the students through a vocabulary slideshow and consecutive Quizizz game in preparation for the day’s chosen literature: “The Endless Streetcar Ride into the Night, and the Tinfoil Noose” by Jean Shepard. Vocabulary words were thoroughly explained. Then, students were led through the text itself; mispronounced words were corrected under the guidance of the tutors. At the end of class, students took notes on a related Youtube video for a short discussion of the video.

At the end of class, student opinions were gathered. In general, the first class was well received. However, some students found that some portions of the class were a bit too challenging, so the tutors will be adjusting the lesson slightly to better fit the students’ needs.

The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Jasmine Chen (1.5 hours) and John Thach (1.5 hours)
