November 2020 Update: AYLUS Volunteers Care for the Seniors!

It’s been a very long year; a global pandemic completely changed our lives, rendering ourselves internet inhabitants, where all social interaction is through a screen. However, this physical isolation has caused much loneliness in senior centers. Since seniors are disproportionately affected by COVID, senior centers have tightened restrictions on personal visits to facilities. With the difficulty involved in setting up calls and the simple lack of face-to-face interaction, senior centers are dealing with the worst effects of isolation.

To combat this, we should donate and write cards to these centers, to bring the warmth of this holiday season to them in the best way we can! You can design a digital card or write on a physical card. You can share stories, introspective reflections, jokes, etc.

These centers are also looking for donations, such as hygiene items (face masks, hand sanitizer, soap, paper towels, tissues) and snacks (chips, cookies). Let’s all work together to bring this holiday season to senior centers through card writing and donations!

Check out the flyer for more information on donation items, card guidelines, and contact info to drop off your donations!

October 2020 Update: AYLUS Nationwide Winter Clothing Drive to Keep Everyone Warm!

No one should go cold this winter! The health effects of extreme cold are life threatening. The unprecedented crisis created by the COVID-19 Pandemic is affecting the lives of millions of people. Families who were already struggling are now at severe risk, and many cannot pay their utility bills. The need for coats this fall and winter will be greater than ever before!

Approximately 200,000 people die each year from the cold. Children cannot regulate their body temperatures as adults do. They can quickly develop hypothermia without protection from the cold. Cold weather makes the body work harder, putting stress on the heart to ensure the body stays warm. A previous study found up to a 31% increase in heart attacks in the coldest months of the year compared with the warmest. Exposure to cold predisposes people, especially children, to infections like pneumonia.

Starting with Greater Princeton Branch Alissa Wu and President Cassie Tammy Wang, AYLUS encourages all members to take part in this Winter Clothing Drive and promote donations of winter clothing in their communities. The clothing items go to charity organizations such as Goodwill Donation Center to help people in need.

The deadly coronavirus outbreak continues to spread across the globe, with cases now confirmed in every American state, the District of Columbia and most U.S. territories. As the number of cases grows despite increasingly strict quarantine measures, US medical workers especially doctors and nurses in hospitals really need our help and support. Because they are short of face masks, protective gown and medical devices in US, we would like to launch this Campaign to support our US hospital and senior center communities. Your donation can help doctors, nurses, patients and seniors. You can help to save more lives.
