Palm Beach AYLUS Volunteers at Feeding South Florida July 2021

On July 17, 2021 the Palm Beach AYLUS branch participated in a Feeding South Florida shift for homes in need.

The project’s goal was to inspect, sort, or package donated food items as prep for distribution at Feeding South Florida.

The shift began with an orientation–showing what to inspect, how to inspect it, different boxes to sort foods with, etc. Items ranged from canned foods and bottled objects to paper towels and diapers. First time volunteers often worked in the inspection unit, where you would have to pick out expired, dented, moldy, or rusty foods and drinks. The items that passed the inspection would be sent off to the next sorting station and those that didn’t pass were thrown away. In case of an item you were unsure of, there was even a question bin, or you could ask the officials/regular volunteers for directions. All the food that was ensured reliable and safe would later be sent off in hauls as emergency food to help families achieve household stability, meal-wise.
