AYLUS Syosset NY Branch offered an English tutoring session (1/10/2021, #22)

On 1/10/2021, seven members of the Syosset AYLUS Branch (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung, Alan Huang, Emily Lin, Jasmine Chen, and Greene Xue) taught a ninety-minute English class to new immigrants with varying degrees of proficiency in English. The classes were instructed in English to immerse the students in an English environment.

There were three classes taught simultaneously, divided between three levels; Intro (Ryan and Greene), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John and Jasmine). This session had a student count of 15 with our reformed curriculum.

The intermediate class using the new curriculum saw a total of 4 students attending. In this class, Emily Lin, Leo Cheng, and Alan Huang taught their lesson using slides which were based off of the “interchange” textbook. They completed Unit 1: Good Memories and started Unit 2: Life in the City. The students’ English levels were also assessed using Kahoot.

In class, Greene Xue & Ryan Leung focused on the topic of jobs in the United States. Students started off by watching a video, then completing some speaking practice, a grammar lesson on telling time, and then reviewing a vocabulary list of job-related words along with definitions.

Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught advanced portion of AYLUS Syosset’s 22nd online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors continued working out of the new Interchange ESL textbook and began the Jobs and Occupations unit. Later, students were led through a vocabulary list, a story crafting exercise, and watched a helpful video on how to best craft a good college application essay.

The following 7 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach (1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang (1.5 hours), Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) Jasmine Chen (1.5 hours), Emily Lin (1.5 hours), and Greene Xue (1.5 hours).
