On August 5th, 2022, students in Roslyn, NY founded the 118th branch of the Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States (AYLUS): Roslyn, NY.

Description of the Roslyn Branch

The Roslyn branch will dedicate its time to not only the welfare of our local community but also of international communities. We truly believe that we can make a difference in the world and that we can do so by raising awareness about the lives people live in nations outside of the United States. In the United States, we generally live better lives than people elsewhere, and we believe that it’s important that we shouldn’t take what we have for granted. There are millions of people elsewhere who don’t have the same luxuries that we do. Through fundraisers and events, we hope to help people acknowledge the imperfections of the world around us and the low quality of life that 689 million other people are suffering through. We will devote our time to helping out these communities however we can. While we are interested in raising awareness about the welfare and well-being of international communities, we are also interested in raising awareness about the problems within our own nation. In 2021, it was estimated that there were 552,830 homeless, more than 38 million people who are food insecure, and over 37.2 million people suffering from poverty in the US. We will strive to help our community in any way we can while educating ourselves, those around us, and future generations about the problems plaguing our world in hopes of creating a better world in the hopefully near future.

Events

Environmental 🌱

  • Long Island Native Plant Initiative: repotting plants, watering plants, preparing the soil, volunteering at the greenhouse
  • Stewardship Saturdays: protecting biodiversity, removing invasive species, cleaning up state parks, animal protection
  • Be a Good Egg: spreading awareness about endangered birds and getting people to sign pledges that advocates for the protection of these species

Medical 🏥

  • Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County: assisting residents through activities such as baking, arts & crafts, reading, and games
  • Alzheimer’s Walks: annual walks to end Alzheimer’s, supporting the cause
  • Sunshine: camp providing educational, recreational, and support programs for children with cancer

Community Development 🔗

  • Lunar New Year events: spreading joy through multicultural celebrations including traditional Chinese arts and music
  • Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI): working as teachers assistants in Chinese classes to help spread chinese culture and teach Mandarin to children
  • NOSH Delivers!: packaging and distributing bags of food for families with food insecurities
  • Jones Beach Air Show & Fourth of July Celebrations: protecting bird habitats during celebrations
  • Bryant Library events: fostering community spirit through helping the local library by hosting events such as open houses
  • Drives: food drives, clothing drives, toy drives, school supply drives, and more!
