AYLUS Roslyn Helps Out at a School of CCA of Long Island (24th) on September 10th, 2023

On Sunday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out at a school of Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island.

As a TA, our role extends beyond traditional classroom support. Not only do we assist the students when the teachers are busy with their lessons, but we also take on a multitude of responsibilities that ensure a smooth and nurturing learning environment.
Today is the first day of school. AYLUS members carried stacks of textbooks to the designated classrooms and distributed them to the students based on the students’ name list. We made sure each student receives the correct book, ensuring they are well-equipped for the day’s lessons.
As the school year progresses, we welcome new students into our classroom. We introduced all the new students to teachers and classmates and learned their names promptly to make them feel included and valued as part of the class community.
At the beginning of the academic year and periodically throughout, we gathered the students to review the school rules. Later on, some young students may become upset or emotional and cry during class time on the first day of school. When that happens, we provided comfort and reassurance, offering a listening ear and a calming presence to help them regain their composure and return to their studies.
When language barriers arise, we stepped in to assist the teacher with translation, ensuring that all students can follow the instructions and participate fully in the lesson. We also escorted students to the bathroom, ensuring their safety and helping them with any needs they may have.
At the end of the school day, we took on the responsibility of making sure that each student is picked up by their designated parent or guardian. We verified identities to guarantee a secure handover and that no child is left unattended.

Members who participated include:
Leah Chan (4 hours), Hunter Chen (4 hours), Hua Tiffany Lin (4 hours), Yang Amy Wu (4 hours), Mingyao Xu (4 hours), Michael Zhang (4 hours), Lily Zhang (4 hours), Brooke Zheng (4 hours), Christopher Zhu (4 hours).
