AYLUS Roslyn Volunteers at Jones Beach Air Show (2st) on May 27, 2023

On Saturday (05/27), from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the Roslyn Branch was at Jones Beach helping to guard the shorebirds’ barriers during the Memorial Weekend Airshow.

The Memorial Day weekend kicks off the unofficial start of summer. The Bethpage Air Show pays tribute to the military personnel who serve our country, and approximately 100,000 visitors are attracted to the air show. There is an enclosure at the beach that was fenced off earlier in the year for the shorebirds to lay eggs, and the eggs are expected to hatch soon. Our job as volunteers was to guard the fence where the shorebirds laid their eggs, making sure the crowd didn’t get too close. We were divided into two groups and stationed in two different areas. We had to specifically watch out for people playing with balls and frisbees, so that they don’t accidentally throw them over the fence, and disturb the shorebirds. Luckily, our mere presence wearing bright green volunteer t-shirts already deterred people from getting too close.

While having the mission of keeping the shorebirds from disturbance, we were still able to enjoy this beautiful day on the beach. Watching the thunderbirds soar through the air was an incredible experience.

Members who participated include: Angeline Li (6 hours), Brooke Zheng (6 hours), Anjali Garg (6 hours), Isabelle Tsui (6 hours), Natalie Tsui (6 hours), Zihan Wang (2.5 hours)
