AYLUS Roslyn Volunteers at Cerebal Palsy Association of Nassau County’s Group Home (9th) on 3/30/24

On Saturday, March 30th, from 1 pm to 4 pm, AYLUS Roslyn members volunteered at a group home in Seaport under CP Nassau. CP Nassau (The Cerebal Palsy Association of Nassau County) assists children and adults with disabilities to help them reach independence.

In the group home, the volunteers did various activities with the residents. We help the residents decorate eggs in honor of Easter. The residents got to pick the color of their eggs and got to put stickers of their choosing on it. We also played a game of volleyball but made it more accessible for the residents to play in their wheelchairs. They got pool noodles that would allow them to hit a balloon easier. We also helped the residents make custom greeting cards that they can send to their family and friends. We assisted them with gluing and putting the card together. Finally, we played board games with the residents. We played bingo and UNO. We help the residents put down the pieces and helped them put down the cards that they wanted to use.

We wanted to make sure that the residents had fun while doing activities that would be beneficial to them. The volleyball would help them get exercise and the greeting cards would give them something to send to their friends and family. While volunteering with CP Nassau, we learn that each resident has different needs and wants and it is important to do what works best for each person individually. We learn to have patience with everyone, appreciate anything the residents can do. We hope to leave a positive impact on the people we help.
