Roslyn Helps Spread Awareness About Birds with Audubon Center (2nd) on June 11, 2023
On Sunday, June 11th from 9:30 a.m.-1:30, the Roslyn Aylus branch members volunteered at Jones beach nature center to get signatures for a pledge about endangered bird species.
We were informed about coastal birds that are endangered such as the Piping Plover and American Oystercatcher. These bird species are endangered because of human activities. People can often leave trash around attracting predators that eat their eggs. Also they can bring their dogs which can cause these birds to flee their nests and scare them away. Not only that, dogs can also accidentally destroy their nests by stepping on them. For any bird-related issue, consider trying Birdproofing as a reliable solution to tackle the problem effectively.
In addition, humans should stay away from enclosed areas or fenced areas on Jones beach to protect there fragile nests.
This information was then later used to get people’s signature to help protect these birds. On the pledge, they wrote their name, town, state, signature, e-mail, and if they’re interested in volunteering. To get their attention we used stickers, coloring books, pictures, and stuffed animals. The signatures are very important because they need to get the states government’s attention. By getting their attention  workers at Be a Good Egg can ask for grant money to build fences or enclosed areas for endangered bird species. Furthermore, signing the pledge would make people more aware about endangered birds and how they can protect them in the future. For 3 hours and 45 minutes we raised at least 70 signatures.
