AYLUS Roslyn Branch Helps Collect Solar Eclipse Glasses for Children in South America (1st) on April 30th, 2024

On April 30th, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 PM, members of AYLUS Roslyn Branch gathered in Roslyn to put together the solar eclipse glasses they collected for a charity course. In this activity, AYLUS Roslyn Branch collaborated with the Bryant Library to collect glasses to donate to Latin American children for the solar eclipse in October, 2024. The Bryant Library is a library located in Roslyn that holds charity events/donations frequently.
On April 8, 2024, we enjoyed a thrilling experience of watching the solar eclipse. These special glasses block out permanent damaging rays from reaching our eyes. Meanwhile, we are
aware that on October 2, 2024, a solar eclipse known as the "ring of fire" will be visible in parts of southern Chile and southern Argentina. We want children in those areas to be able to enjoy
this experience safely. Obtaining these sunglasses will prevent children from looking with their
bare eyes, causing permanent damage.
Since the end of the solar eclipse, members have been looking out for ways to recycle
and reuse our solar eclipse glasses. When we heard of the Bryant Library event, members
made posters and spread them by hand and through social media. They reached out to family
and friends to collect used solar eclipse glasses. When we finally met to bring everything
together today, we sorted the glasses by size, and then we sent them to the Bryant Library.
Altogether, we added a total of 86 sunglasses to the collection of the Bryant library. The staff at
the Bryant Library is impressed by our action of donating glasses, which will help those in need
and allow them to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event.
We are thankful towards our members for taking time out of their spring break to help others. This event is meaningful to us because it taught all of us that some things that are no longer useful towards certain people can be very useful towards others in need. In the future, we will seek opportunities to recycle and reuse resources we have, and continue to make differences in our community and beyond.
