AYLUS Roslyn Helps Out at a School of CCA of Long Island (26th) on September 24th, 2023

On Sunday September 24, 2023, from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm the Roslyn AYLUS branch cooperates with teachers from the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island

Today as TA’s we not only assisted the teachers with the help of attendance for the students that were in the classroom. We also made sure every student was engaged, learning and having fun within the class. There were many teachers that had trouble with the technology and was unfamiliar was how the devices should be used. We gladly help the teacher with all the problem along the line of Screen sharing, how the pull up the materials they needed and printing the papers out for the student that forgot to do it. One of the most important thing is that we see the students as our friends rather than just a subject in the room we’re assigned to take care of. We engage with chatting with them and asking them what are there hobbies are, what there favorited foods are just to make they feel more comfortable and have a positive environment to express and learn in.

TAs weren’t the only jobs either. Some of our volunteers worked in the front desk and was tasked with printing and bring course materials, tests, and homework to the respective classrooms. Volunteers also packaged and distributed the moon cakes to each of the teachers in celebration of the mid-autumn festival.

Due to the approach of the mid-autumn festival, from 4:00pm-4:40pm the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island held a puppet show at the main lobby for the students and their parents to learn about the story behind this holiday and why we celebrate it. During the events they had a very entertaining puppet show on the back story of the holiday and showed the students how the traditional delicacies are made and the story behind it and the students were very eager and happy with learning new information about the culture. As TAs, we helped shepherd the students into their seats and made sure they stayed engaged.

Afterward we went back to the classrooms and advanced on with the curriculum. We made sure the students weren’t writing on or damaging the school’s property’s. It’s easy to ignore the wrong strokes and turn in careless writing so we keep an eye on how the students are writing their mandarin characters and quickly correct the mistake before it become a habit.
