Dix Hills Branch helps at Bethpage State Park to remove weeds and grass for the community on June 3, 2023

Written by: Jason Chen

AYLUS Dix Hill volunteers once again helps at an environmental event, this time at Bethpage State Park. The volunteers this time assisted in removing weed and grass from a patch of land to clear the place for a golf course.

Weeds are considered undesirable plants due to several reasons. Firstly, they compete with desired plants for essential resources like sunlight, water, nutrients, and space. Their rapid growth and spread can deprive other plants of these necessary resources, hindering their growth. In agricultural settings, weeds can significantly reduce crop yields by competing with crops for resources, interfering with harvesting operations, and increasing the risk of diseases and pests. Additionally, weeds can have a negative impact on the aesthetic appeal of gardens and landscapes, disrupting the intended design and overall visual appeal. They can also serve as hosts for pests, insects, and diseases, posing a threat to the health of desired plants. Some weeds, such as ragweed or poison ivy, can trigger allergies or cause skin irritations in individuals. Invasive weed species can quickly dominate ecosystems, outcompeting native plants and disrupting biodiversity. Compliance with legal requirements for weed control may be necessary in certain jurisdictions. Overall, removing weeds is important to mitigate competition, preserve crop yield, maintain aesthetics, prevent pests and diseases, reduce health risks, preserve ecosystems, and adhere to regulations

Along with many different AYLUS Branches, like Roslyn, our volunteers slowly but surely removed most of the grass in a certain area. With the hard work of our volunteers, the Bethpage State Park is more suitable and enjoyable for visitors
