AYLUS Garden City volunteers recently participated in a community service session at The NEST in Nassau Community College, where students had the opportunity to learn about the organization and assist with the daily operations of its food pantry.
During the volunteer session, students learned about what The NEST does and how the food pantry operates. They toured the pantry to become familiar with where different items are located and how the pantry is organized.
Students also learned how food bags are prepared for guests and what specific questions to ask in order to provide each guest with the items they need. This helped students understand that each family’s needs may be different and that volunteers play an important role in making sure guests receive appropriate supplies.
After learning about the pantry’s operations, students helped with several tasks, including restocking shelves, preparing individual bags of dry dog food for guests who needed pet food, and sweeping the pantry area.
Through this service experience, students gained a better understanding of how a community food pantry supports local residents while contributing to the pantry’s day-to-day operations.
