On 3/21/2026, Aylus volunteers went to Caumsett State Park to collect garbage and build fences from 9:30am to 12:30am.
After gathering, the volunteers separated into 2 groups to perform different tasks. The first group were picking up garbage, mainly plastic, and then putting them into a bucket. Finally, the trash in buckets were collected into a huge black plastic bag and weighed. In the end, the volunteers collected about 120 pounds of trash in total.
Another group of volunteers were making fences. There’re 2 people per group: one controlling the string and tying knots, and one ripping flags(bright plastic ribbons) off and assisting the other to tie it to the string. The strings are wrapped around iron bars, which penetrated into the sand. The area surrounded are places where piping plovers and other sea birds make their nests, and finally plastic signs were tied to the iron bar to inform people that they should avoid walking into the area.
What we did today is similar to what we did last week, it’s just in a different location. It’s vital to protect wild animals and not push them to extinction.
