On September 9th, 2023, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, volunteers from the Oakland Gardens Branch cleaned and picked up the trash in our local park, Alley Park. The weather today was hot and humid, however our volunteers did not give up. Our goal is to provide a clean environment for the nearby residents and anyone who frequents the park.
As we walked around the entire park picking up any trash and bottles that we saw, we managed to find a variety of objects that were left in the park. We found a usable lighter that still had fluid in it, which could cause a fire that can spread and burn parts of our park. There were multiple shards of glass lying around, which we deem dangerous to anyone walking in the park. Among the objects that we found, there are objects from everyday life, such as claw clips, utensils, frisbee, and plastic water bottles. Today, there were also many other clubs/events taking place, ranging in all ages. We managed to get along with these groups in the park. Some that joined us today aren’t yet members, but expressed some interest in joining as they felt like we were doing the right thing: helping our community. Residents living around the park thanked us for doing this, as they believed this a great thing to do for our environment.
At the end of this, we managed to have bags of trash to throw away and bottles to recycle. Through this, we managed to leave the park cleaner than when we first entered. We are glad that we are able to create a better environment for our community. We wish that in the future our members will also continue to do this!
