On Sunday, July 23, members of the Roslyn AYLUS branch volunteered at Point Lookout Beach with Audubon New York from 9:00AM-2:15PM.
Volunteers began by helping set up the tent and organize brochures, stickers, and pamphlets. Afterwards, volunteers gathered pens and sheets to collect signatures from people on the beach. By collecting signatures, volunteers helped educate others and spread awareness about endangered birds, such as the piping plover and the American oystercatcher, and the importance of protecting their nesting sites. In addition, collecting signatures helps increase funding for Audubon to continue projects to protect these endangered species. By signing the pledge, visitors also agreed to keep a safe distance from nesting sites, not to leave trash on the beach, and to keep dogs and other pets away from nesting sites so that birds do not abandon their nests.
To end the day, volunteers helped clean up, re-organize papers, and put everything away. Overall, volunteers learned and helped educate others about the endangered birds on the beach, raising awareness, as well as collecting signatures, to raise funding for the Audubon society to continue protecting these species in the future.
