Volunteer Event Report: Mercy Soup Kitchen
Date: July 18, 2023
Location: 17 S 20th St, Wyandanch

The volunteer event at Mercy Soup Kitchen took place on July 18 with the participation of one dedicated volunteer and the dedicated staff of Mercy Soup Kitchen. Despite the limited number of volunteers, the event was a success due to the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by the participant. Seeing as this was AYLUS’s first soup kitchen event, we were reaching out for collaboration.

Upon arrival, the volunteer immediately began assisting the kitchen staff in preparing meals for the members of the community. This included many steps, but with the help of the Soup Kitchen members and the volunteer, the meals were prepared efficiently. Some tasks include, sorting napkins, forks, and spoons into sets, packing sandwiches in bags, making both a mixed fruit salad and a garden salad, prepping containers, sorting figs, making desserts, and of cours, cooking the main meal. Additionally, the mercy soup kitchen collaborated with 7-eleven, who also helped provide food to give to the community.

As the meal preparation concluded, the volunteer took the initiative to serve the freshly prepared food to the visitors of the soup kitchen. The workers’ friendly demeanor and willingness to engage in conversations brought smiles to the faces of those in need. Due to the pandemic, the food was being handed out in the same method as that of a drive-thru, and the smooth operation proved effective.

Apart from cooking and serving, the volunteer also took on the responsibility of cleaning and organizing the kitchen area. This demonstrated not only a sense of ownership but also a deep understanding of the importance of maintaining a clean environment for the guests.

Despite being only one volunteer, he managed to form meaningful connections with the staff and guests at Mercy Soup Kitchen. Their empathetic and compassionate approach made a significant impact on those they interacted with, leaving a lasting impression on both the recipients of the meals and the fellow kitchen staff.

The event’s success stands as a testament to the profound impact that volunteers can have in fostering change and uplifting the community.
