On June 2 nd , 2023, AYLUS volunteers returned to their long-time partner organization, the Light and Salt Association’s SMILE program. However, this time, rather than offering one-on-one assistance to students, the four volunteers each had free selection in who was allotted more attention.
The day opened with Ms. Nancy teaching life skills for an hour, which then shifted to Augustine
leading the exercise group while volunteers received training on bucket drums from Ms. Sharon. After an hour-and-a-half lunch break, provided by Ms. Sharon, equipment for the bucket drums class was passed out and the students were divided between Derek and Haoqi as co-instructors for practice. The day closed with a drawing class with Ms. Zowei.
The event proved to be a success as many volunteers are seasoned participants in the SMILE
program. With the partnership between AYLUS and the Light and Salt association, this event marks the annual return for volunteers to the SMILE program.
