Murrieta AYLUS Helps Local Food Bank (14th) (3/30/23)

Reported by Julie (Hsin Chen) Lu

On March 30th, 2023, Murrieta AYLUS members helped the Community Mission of Hope (CMOH). CMOH began as a partnership with the Orange County Rescue Mission to resolve food insecurity during the recession in 2009. They provide tangible help, through food and hygiene products, as well as compassionate mentorship for the social, physical, financial and spiritual needs of local individuals and families.CMOH operates a food pantry that serves hundreds of families every month. When the members arrived, they filled out the necessary paper work and the staff members walked them through logging in to the computer and how to record their hours each time they visit. They were then led to the area where all the food is kept and packed to give away. The members were each given a job of putting in a specific type of food into a plastic bag that would be passed down the line before getting placed in a large box, ready to be picked up by anyone who needs it. Together, the volunteers managed to finish 250 bags of food! They then moved on to flatten empty cardboard boxes and sorted them into their corresponding piles, shuffle laminated labels in alphabetical order, ensure that stacks of labels were correctly sorted, and lastly cleaned up the area. The members had a great time and look forward to their next visit to the Community Mission of Hope!
