Bellaire volunteers donate to Turkey, Syria Earthquake survivors on February 20,2023

On February 20, 2023, AYLUS Bellaire volunteers collected and delivered sleeping bags to support the families that were impacted by earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

The earthquake was the strongest in Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan Earthquake, and the deadliest seismic event in Turkey’s history since the 526 Antioch and the deadliest in Syria since the 1822 Aleppo Earthquake. Tens of thousands of people were left homeless and lacked basic amenities such as food and water. AYLUS volunteers donated sleeping bags and blankets to aid Turkish and Syrian survivors. The collected items including sleeping bags were firstly sent to the Turkish Consulate in Houston by Eric, Alexander and Ethan. Then they learned that all the donations are only accepted at 1211 Rankin Road location which is close to the Bush International Airport. After some quick discussions, they decided to load all the donations into one car to deliver right away so that the donations can be sent to the needed hands as soon as possible. After the load up, Ethan Liu delivered the donations including a total of 14 new sleeping bags to the volunteer at the collection warehouse.

The volunteers who participated in this event are the following: Eric Li (2 hours for donation pickup), Alexander Tang (2 hours for donation pickup), Ryan Li (1 hour for poster design) and Ethan Liu (3 hours for donation pickup and delivery).
