On Saturday, October 1st, 2022, six AYLUS Pearland members volunteered for the Community Health Fair of the Light and Salt Association. During this 4.5-hour time period, participants helped not only with screenings for hepatitis C and B, but also making sure the community was well informed about risks, causes, and effects of HCV.
Early in the morning, volunteers went through trainings on how to talk to and communicate with the older folk who might not understand English. Scripts were taught to those who could not read Chinese but could speak it. A few entrants including Yichen Wang helped people with translation to fill out consent forms for the hepatitis tests. Other partakers such as Daniel and Emma Xi helped enter the blood tests of citizens into a machine that detects hepatitis diseases in the bloodstream.
Meanwhile, the rest of the volunteers, namely Nicole Song, Yifan Wang, and Joshua Wu educated the public on hepatitis. They explained in Chinese how hepatitis is liver inflammation that can be transmitted through blood. Those who went to the health fair went home well enlightened about symptoms and dangers of hepatitis B and C.
Volunteers were Nicole Song, Emma Xi, Daniel Xi, Yifan Wang, Yichen Wang, Joshua Wu (4.5 hours).
