AYLUS Bellaire Branch Volunteered at the Houston Children’s Charity Back2School Backpack Distribution Event on August 6, 2022

On August 6, from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m., fifteen members of the AYLUS Bellaire Branch volunteered at the Houston Children’s Charity (HCC) Back2School Backpack Drive-Through Distribution Event.

Through this event, HCC aimed to provide backpacks full of school supplies to children in need, with the motto that every child should start the school year prepared. Beginning in 2005, this annual Back2School program has helped over 45,000 children spanning across 5 counties in the Houston area. This year HCC was able to provide more than 3,500 children with a backpack and school supplies needed for their academic success.

Previously on July 16th, the volunteers had organized postcards that would be sent to families of elementary, middle, and high schoolers in need of backpacks and supplies for the upcoming back-to-school season. Today, the AYLUS Bellaire members guided vehicles in to pick up the backpacks filled with many essential school supplies like pencils, notebooks, and highlighters. Volunteers first identified the families coming in, noting the number and type of backpacks each vehicle would be receiving, which would be distributed at the next station. Members also passed out folders full of school supplies and baggies with toothbrushes to people at the event. Additionally, they helped direct traffic to keep the event moving smoothly.

Fifteen members volunteered at this event (3 hours including 0.5 hour for travel): Sophia Li, Helena Wang, Irene Chen, Miranda Wang, Alexander Tang, Alan Du, Eric Li, Selina Qiu, Andy Shen, Mingyi Chen, Ethan Liu, Albert Ying, Owen Cheng, Serena Li, and Shreyas Sinha.
