AYLUS Greater Temecula Valley Lends a Hand to Local Farm in June 2022 (10th)

Reported by Jessica Lu

On June 14 and 18, Greater Temecula Valley AYLUS members Adora Xiao (6 hrs), Jessica Lu (6 hrs), Julie Lu (6 hrs), and Ally Negulescu (6 hrs) lent a hand to a local farm.

On Tuesday, members started off by harvesting the squash/zucchini. There weren’t many to pick that day so they quickly finished harvesting the vegetables and brought the buckets to the main station. They moved on to weeding through the watermelon rows, which was quite difficult since the watermelon vines grew into the walkways between the rows. But the members still managed it and successfully finished in time. The members also went to harvest cucumbers that also filled the buckets quickly. They had to lift up the leaves and vines that covered the cucumbers in order to see the cucumbers.

On Saturday, members again started by harvesting the squash and zucchini. The vegetables grew quite quickly since Tuesday and filled buckets rapidly. After, members went to go weed through the onion rows. Many weeds had grown since they last weeded through that area so they spent some time raking out the weeds and pulling out weeds by hand that was growing next the to onions. Later, the members were taught how to sort out the vegetables using good ones and ones that went bad. The ones that weren’t good to be packed were packed in a separate box that was going to be sent to a place for rescued animals.
