In July, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) volunteered at Rise Summer Camp for 2022.
Members of Greater Princeton AYLUS are participating in a volunteering opportunity through teaching classes at the Rise Summer Camp. The Rise Summer Camp is a 6 week camp made affordable to everyone, where tuition is based on family income. It helps everyone have the opportunity to have a memorable summer experience without having to worry about the financial aspect in less fortunate families.
Today was the first class of the Rise Summer Camp. We started off with introductions, and getting to know all the students, then taught the pieces, their names, and how to set up the chess board. After practice with the basics we went on to learn how chess pieces move, and at the end of class the students played a quick game. Everyone enjoyed learning how to play chess since it was something new that the students never experienced before, and something special that will stick with them forever.
AYLUS members Sarah Yan, Erick Yan, and George Chen are hosting a chess program for both Group 4 and Group 5 students. Along with teaching the chess class portion, AYLUS members will also work as assistants with other programs and classes.
The next chess class will be on Thursday, July 7th, for Group 4 and 5.
