AYLUS Pearland supports LSA Healthy Living Program Week 4, June 27th and 30th

On June 27th and 30th , AYLUS Pearland members had the opportunity to participate in a clinical health program sponsored by the Light and Salt Association. The program's aim was to develop a curriculum for youth outreach activities in underserved communities that promotes healthy living styles and provides evidence-based cancer prevention interventions for underserved populations in Texas. The program was funded by CPRIT.

On June 27th, the session was focused on the link between food and cancer. The discussion covered ingredients com only found in food and the different causes of cancer, including arsenic in rice and carcinogens in the environment. After lunch, Ms. Ellen led a session on All of Us, a research organization that welcomes participants from all backgrounds to gather data to help find ways to treat and prevent diseases. Volunteers developed a procedure on how to educate community members to encourage them to participate in All of Us.

On July 30th, the volunteers continued their discussion on cancer prevention, specifically focusing on early and late stages of the disease and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. They documented how to advise community members on cancer prevention. As the last session of the program, volunteers reviewed all their write-ups and procedures, combining them into a comprehensive handbook.

Overall, AYLUS Pearland members gained valuable experience in community outreach about healthy living with the guidance of the wonderful instructors from the Light and Salt Association. This program enabled volunteers to step out of their comfort zones and learn about the links between food, lifestyle, and cancer prevention, and how to share this knowledge with their community.
