On August 11, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) teamed up and taught kids in the subjects of reading and writing.
The 1.5-hour class offered by GPA members Karen Yang and Kathy Yang teach 5 middle schoolers, Aria, Claire, Victor, Meisu, and Helen, on reading and writing. We switched our classes back to Tuesday due to some scheduling conflicts and could not have classes last week due to a power outage but we are back this week with some free writing.
We began with a warm up asking the kids to respond to the prompt “It all began on a typical day, as I was walking through the store. Then, he stopped me and told me I had to listen to him closely. He said that my life depended on it.” Then, we reflected on last week’s homework and reading exercise and answered questions.
Next, we began our free writing by first introducing some prompts that the kids could write from. These prompts included writing a story “about a girl who always gets into trouble—and what happens when people realize an incident wasn’t her fault” and “about a class of sixth-grade students who discover a huge secret about their teacher—and what happens when the teacher finds out what they know,” and many more!
After writing, We made sure the kids edited their stories for conciseness, making it interesting, etc. Finally, we also elaborated on the book talks they have to do, next week. Creating a Google Slides Presentation on their books was their homework. Tuesday, next week, is our next class!
The 1 hr class offered by GPA members Abigail Bao, Angela Bao, and Olivia Mao teaches a few elementary school students in Princeton. The students shared the stories they wrote with the members. The members enjoy their fantastic stories while helping them fix grammar.
Anthony F Yang did 2 hours of Community Service through the preparation and class of tutoring third graders(Aimee Zhang, Mulan Yang, Nico Fischer, Dayna Li) reading and writing.
