On April 20 and 27, 2020, despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) continued its ABC Chess program to help kids learn how to play chess by moving the program online.
GPA volunteer Sarah Yan was the Champion of 2017 NJ Open U1600, while Erick Yan was the Champion of 2016 Manhattan Open Mixed Doubles Team. They are teaching around 12 school-aged children how to play chess and various strategies used to win a game. Sarah and Erick taught various skills used to defeat one’s opponent in the complicated game of chess such as pins and forks. With the continuation of the online classes, we can help students who have the passion for learning chess, even during this hard time.
The program will be once a week. Every Monday, the students enjoy learning the unique skills used to win tactical positions such as checkmates in two moves with various pieces that members Sarah Yan and Erick Yan prepared ahead of time. Learning chess is a wonderful way to pass time at home. Chess also is a marvellous way to build your brain, to become stronger and look at many more possibilities that you have never seen before.
Participants: Sarah Yan (April 20 and 27, 2 hours each), Erick Yan (April 20 and 27, 2 hours each).
