On August 22nd, from 3:45 to 5:00 PM, the AYLUS Great Neck Branch held an AAPI session at the Main Library to inform children about Asian culture through book reading and arts and crafts activities. The event kicked off with volunteers reading picture books to children about annual Asian traditions, and historical figures. Nathan read, “I am Golden”, which referenced Chinese heritage and embracing uniqueness. Then, Jiangyuan read “Wei Skates On” which dealt with performance anxiety and competitions. Lastly, Andrew read “Birthday Soup”, which tells the story about a young girl’s birthday and celebrating with consuming miyeok guk. While these volunteers were reading, the other crafts volunteers made sure to be engaged as well, participating in the reading circle and asking informative questions to the children.
After the three volunteers read the books, the participants had the opportunity to engage in multiple arts and crafts activities: Origami, paper stars, pom pom art, and crochet. Victoria and Rainie supported two young learners in making basic crochet chains. While Christina showed students how to make small stars. Nathan and Rebecca made origami penguins while Isabelle and Goldman supported participants in pom pom art. They took off the adhesives and stuck the different colored pom poms to make animals. Overall, this event was both fun and informative for both the participants and the volunteers. We thank everyone for coming and hope to see them next time!
