On the afternoon of Saturday, June 20, 2026, members of AYLUS Great Neck Branch gathered at the Great Neck Main Library to host a reading and craft program for local families. The event combined storytime with hands-on activities, giving children an opportunity to learn, create, and have fun.
The program began with three story readings. Volunteer Rebecca read “Caged”, a story about freedom and imagination inside a refugee camp, while Amber Zhou read “Welcoming the Lunar New Year”, a story about how to welcome the new year. Lastly, volunteer Nathan Li read “A Roof!”, a story about communities banding together and helping one another in the face of natural disasters.
After storytime, volunteers led several craft activities. Rebecca Xu helped organize the event and assisted participants throughout the afternoon. Andrew Li and Jiangyuan Yu taught children how to make origami, while Rainie Cheng and Victoria Xu introduced basic crochet techniques and guided participants as they learned a new skill. Christina Pan made lucky stars out of paper. Amber Zhou and Jolynn Li taught our participants how to create trophies out of modeling clay in honor of Father’s Day for tomorrow.
Throughout the event, volunteers worked closely with participants to make sure everyone felt welcome and engaged. In total, nine AYLUS members contributed to the program. By combining reading with interactive activities, the event encouraged literacy, creativity, and community involvement while providing a positive experience for local families.
