AYLUS Great Neck Branch volunteers for Great Neck Park District (68th) 4/25/26

On 4/25/2026, Aylus volunteers went to the Energy and Nature Center in Jones Beach from 9:30am to 12:00am . What we’re mainly doing today is to remove invasive plants like mugworts and crowned vetch using shovels, gloves, and small hoes. Even though it’s drizzling, Aylus volunteers still managed to do work. It is important to take out as many roots as possible because if you don’t do so, a rain can almost recover everything. Roots can be way harder to remove than you think: they’re tangled, formed “webs”, and require a lot of strength to be pulled out. Often, a lot of time is spent just to remove roots from a small area. Other than this, some volunteers assisted planting native plants like gray goldenrods from Nissequogue State Park. They were planted in areas where there’re no invasive plants.
