On October 18, 2026, the AYLUS Roslyn branch volunteered as teacher assistants at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI) from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to help students and teachers with daily tasks which included schoolwork, preparations, and more to make sure everything was as neat and efficient as possible.
The first part of the volunteering experience was helping the students and teachers with work assigned. We are first responsible for welcoming every student and getting them set up and ready for the class to begin. Throughout this period, the teacher will hand on papers like schoolwork or homework for us to pass out or collect. The teacher usually plays videos on basic fundamentals of Chinese for the students while we settle. One of the ways we help is also taking the kids to breaks or the bathroom which saves time for the teacher. Usually a class can have around 1-4 teacher assistance to make sure the class runs as smoothly as possible so they can maximize learning time.
The second part of this experience was cultural classes. Today was the second day since they started these classes. These classes included dance, arts, chess, diablo, or martial arts. I was assigned with diablo and it saw the amazing tricks these kids could do while also watching them to ensure no one gets hurt using these yoyos.
Volunteering as teachers assistants gives us a great experience to feel the responsibility of a teacher and strengthens our traits such as patience, teamwork, responsibility, and lets us interact with bright students to ensure they will be successful in these classes.
