AYLUS Great Neck Branch State Park on 04/18/2026 66th

On April 18th, AYLUS volunteers went to Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The main goal of this
activity was to help restore the natural environment by removing invasive plant species.
During the event, we focused on clearing plans such as English ivy, Glechoma Hederaces, and
mugwort. These plants grow very quickly and can harm native ecosystems by taking up space,
sunlight, and nutrients that other plants need. Before we started working, a staff member
explained how to identify these invasive species and showed us the proper way to remove
them, including pulling out the roots to prevent regrowth.
The group was then divided into small teams to work more efficiently. Each team was
responsible for clearing a specific area. Volunteers used gloves and tools such as shovels to
remove invasive plants, while others collected and disposed of the removed vegetation.
Throughout the process, team members cooperated, and communicated to ensure the work
was done efficiently.
This activity required physical effort and teamwork. By working together, the group was able to
clear ours, significant amount of invasive plants and improve the condition of the natural
environment. In addition, the activity increased awareness of environmental protection, and the
importance of maintaining ecological balance.
Overall, the volunteer group successfully completed each task, and contributed positively to the
preservation of the park. The experience demonstrated the value of teamwork, responsibility,
and community service.
