Aylus Great Neck Branch State Park on 04/11/2026 (65th)

On 4/11/2026, Aylus volunteers went to a greenhouse in Nissequogue State Park to fill up pots with soil from 9:30am to 12:00am (2.5 hours).

Filling pots is not as simple as you may think and requires a lot of strength. First, the volunteers cut a 60-pound bag of soil into half using a metal knife. Then, one used a baseball bat to hit the bag, making the soil inside soft. After that, several cups of additional fertilizer, which look like mung beans, are added into the soil after the plastic bag is removed. After mixing, the soil is collected into black plastic pots and pressed to fill more soil in. Finally, the pots were placed onto shelves in the greenhouse.

The pots with soil are going to be planted with native trees and shrubs that will be sent to different places in Long Island.
