On October 17th, 2026, AYLUS Oakland Gardens members went to the Four Winds Playground to repaint the benches from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm as their 259th event. As these benches were not repainted in recent years, the paint was peeling and showing the wood underneath. Our members did their absolute best to remove peeling paint and apply a fresh coat of paint.
To start off the event, seven of our members took scrapers to remove peeling paint from the benches. If we left the old paint on the benches, when the new paint is applied, it would both look bad and peel faster. As a result, our scrapers had to do their best as fast as they could to let the painters and brushers work on the benches.
Once our scrapers had finished scraping a bench, our members used brushes to remove the paint that is left on the bench. Once removed, some of our members used large and small paint rollers to paint the benches. After sufficiently covering the bench, we called over a parent advisor who checked the benches to see if it was done. Once deemed complete, we stuck a wet paint sign on the bench to alert residents of the wet paint.
We would like to thank the NYC Parks Department for providing us with the tools and paint. This event would not have been possible otherwise.
