On Saturday, July 26th, from 9:00 A.M. to 12 P.M., the members of AYLUS Roslyn volunteered
at NOSH Delivers!, a local food pantry that aims to provide food to families in need.
Our first task was to make 50 NOSH bags filled with rice, canned vegetables, and tuna. These
bags were later distributed to homes in the surrounding community, as elderly people and busy
families greatly benefit from being able to receive groceries without having to make a trip down
to the pantry. When we finished assembling the bags, we then prepared the items for Monday’s
NOSH bags, since NOSH is often busier during weekdays.
Later, some people were assigned to the farmer’s market, which is restocked every day with
fresh bread and produce. Our job was to check all of the bread to make sure none of it had
gone moldy, and to throw out any bread that had either gone bad or was stale. Meanwhile,
others were either outside breaking down boxes, helping visitors browse through the shelves as
pantry guides, or decorating breakfast and lunch bags to aid kids who may need extra meals
throughout the week, especially during the summer, where they cannot receive a free lunch
through school.
One of NOSH’s main goals is to remove barriers surrounding food insecurity, and small things
such as making sure that the food is in good condition and increasing food accessibility play an
important role in destigmatizing receiving food assistance.
We were thrilled to be able to help out at NOSH on such a pleasant day, and we aim to promote
NOSH’s mission to provide resources to communities all over Long Island.\
