On Friday, July 11th, AYLUS Syosset visited the Sangha education center to aid in activities with the visitors. Today the theme was all about traditional music, but specifically on drums. We learned about how music is a means of communication and connection between people, and that’s still the same today. We recognize the same beat patterns and rhythms from primitive times to modern music. Today, we were able to play some of these instruments including the kalimba, rainstick, and drum. While they are all very simple instruments, we were able to recreate the same basic rhythms that emerged years and years ago. In the afternoon, we had our own opportunity to make a Cajon drum with Malcolm Hall. An expert in both music and woodworking, Malcolm guided us to cutting the pieces of wood to put together on another day. Next time, we will all be able to build and paint our very own Cajon drums!
