On Wednesday July 9th, AYLUS Syosset visited the Sangha learning center to accompany the visitors. As Sangha continues their summer program, volunteers were also able to participate and assist everyone with the activities. Today, we started off with a member of the mAsian American Institute of Research and Engagement, an organization that works to bring more awareness and inclusion for Asians. Many school districts across Long Island have a high Asian population density, yet there aren’t many opportunities where these cultures get the recognition they deserve. We first learned about the background of some Hindu gods, then moved on to traditional Rangoli crafting using various colored powders and papers. We followed with Rakhi friendship bracelets, which are often shared between siblings as well. After lunch, members from the Sweetbriar Nature Center paid a visit alongside some animals. They presented a rabbit, three different types of lizards, as well as a chinchilla. Everyone learned about the history of all the animals, and even got to pet them as well!
