Aylus Great Neck Brance Volunteer at Bethpage State Park on April 5th, 2025

On 4/5/25, members of AYLUS worked at Bethpage State Park, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for the first time this year. In order to get rid of some invasive plants that were previously inhabiting the park, multiple people worked together getting rid of the plants and ivy. Some people used shovels to dig out some of the invasive plants, rakes to get rid of the old leaves and expose some of the English Ivy for other people to rip out of the soil. Some people cut the ivy that was spreading onto the trees while the others working to dig out the Japanese Holly, another invasive plant, to restore some of the trees that were covered in ivy and vines. Members tried to pull them off of the trees. In the end, the members of AYLUS worked hard and made the area more cleaned out by removing the invasive plants, while trying not to damage the other plants and insects that were in the area. Getting rid of the invasive plants help preserve the native plants that is already there. Our job is to protect the environment helping expose the natives plants to sunlight. Getting rid of the English ivy will allow the natives to get nutrient from the soil without competition and continue to grow and flourish the state park.
