On 7/6/24, members of AYLUS Syosset volunteered at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center by performing a multitude of activities such as removing weeds and spreading wood chips around certain pathways of the sanctuary. Members split into three groups: one to remove weeds, one to rake and spread wood chips on the main pathways of the sanctuary, and one to transport the wood chips to the paths using wheelbarrows. These wood chips were crucial to support the native plant species of the sanctuary, reduce the number of weeds, and retain moisture within the soil.
After finishing the weeds and wood chips, members helped to clean up the park as it was expecting campers. Members first moved logs and bordered pathways to make the park easier to navigate, then removed Duckweed from one of the ponds of the sanctuary to clean it, and lastly placed rocks around the pond to prevent people from slipping into the pond.
