Phoenix AYLUS Archives Historical Documents in Spring 2021

The Phoenix Branch archived 77 documents this Spring for the Citizen Archivist Mission. Since the start of the volunteer activity in July 2020, volunteers have altogether achieved 324 hours of transcriptions.

 

Annie Fitzgerald transcribed 30  documents: June 1934-July 1935 pg. 14, 21,25, 27, [No caption entered] (U.S. Air Force Number 21163AC) pg. 1-2, Declassification Notice pg. 1-3, Immigration “Chinese (Business) Partnership” Investigation Case file for The Young China, in San Francisco pg. 23-25, Kwak, Chung Sun – Case Number: 38313/009-06 – Ship of Arrival: Tatuta Maru, 07/07/1938 pg. 1-5, Norris Dam: Grant – Hunley pg.6-8, Wolff, Karl pg. 7-9, Norris Dam: Taylor – York pg.11-13, Brief of Telegrams of the Department of State,  and Prepared by Division of Naval Intelligence pg. 2-5.

“In the Korean War photograph, I learned that they kept records of activity and communication between the army generals. There were also records and letters between the generals that documented the way soldiers died in wars and important updates about their army. These transcriptions took 1 hour. ”

“These documents kept records of the Chinese immigrants that immigrated to the US in a company partnership. The documents listed each member of the company, their job, and their salary. These transcriptions took 1 hour. ”

“These documents kept track of the immigration process of Kwak Chung Sun who immigrated to the US through an army plane. There was another document that explained the process of a male in South Korea joining the US Army. These transcriptions took 1 hour.”

“From these documents, I learned about the way families were relocated during the 1930s. The man in the records was a father and a farmer, who lacked the money to rent a truck to move his assets. These transcriptions took 1 hour. ”

“From these documents, I learned about the situation in Germany while Hitler had power. These letters explained where the Austria and German army were located and stated what Hitler had told them to do. These transcriptions took 1 hour. ”

“In these documents, I learned about a person who was moving to a farm. They kept records of their harvest and how many assets they had, such as pork, potatoes, and corn. These transcriptions took 1 hour.”

“From these documents, I learned about the relationship between Baghdad and Turkey’s governments. Leaders in the governments sent telegrams to each other addressing conflict between the countries and whether they support or oppose the propositions made. These transcriptions took 1 hour. ”

 

Angelina Zhang transcribed 20 documents: Air Force Award Cards [Air Medal]: Edwardsen, Edward – Elkerton, George pg. 121 , 491-501, Air Force Award Cards [Air Medal]: Edwardsen, Edward – Elkerton, George pg. 121 , 502-508, Air Force Award Cards [Air Medal]: Edwardsen, Edward – Elkerton,  and George pg. 509-532.

“These 12 documents took me around 2 hours. I transcribed the awards given by the 12th Bombardment Division. They gave Oak Leaf Clusters to Herbert Eichoff, Harry Eichoff, Edward Eichoff, Lloyd Eickert, and Harry Eickemeyer. These awards were given in different locations ranging from Florida to New Jersey in 1945.”

“These 8 documents took me around an hour. The Hq. 1st bombardment division and the 8th and 12th Bombardment Division awarded Oak Leaf Clusters to different people. For example, Warren Eickmann was awarded for serving as a first lieutenant while Carl Eickhorst was sergeant. These awards were given from 1943-1945.”

 

Clarrise Qin transcribed 2 Documnebnts from the Case File of Joseph Brown.

“This document depicts Joseph Brown’s sentencing for drinking while in the army and also shows his application for insurance. It took me roughly an hour to finish this. ”

 

Wenting Chen transcribed 19 documents: Nebraska MPS Apartments at 2514 North 16th Street pg11, 12, 13, Superintendent M. Friedman, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to J.J. Duncan. pg.1 and 2, Superintendent J.F. House to J.J. Duncan. pg 2 and 3, Circular Regarding Opening Exercises.pg. 2,3, and 4, Julius Henke, Rosebud, South Dakota, to James J. Duncan. pg 1 and 2, Superintendent J.F. House, Rapid City, South Dakota, to J.J. Duncan. pg. 1 and 2, Memorandum, State Department Summary of Telegrams pg. 1 and 2, Memorandum, State Department Summary of Telegrams pg. 1,  and Telegram from United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union Walter Bedell Smith of Article 1 and 2. 

“I did a Telegram from United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union Walter Bedell Smith of Article from Soviet Literary Gazette pg. 1. I learned that Harry Truman grew up on a farm, his eyesight was weak, and he played the piano well but did not become a musician but a president.””I did Memorandum, State Department Summary of Telegrams pg. 1. I learned that the Soviets wanted to take over Austria.”

“I did a Telegram from United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union Walter Bedell Smith of Article from Soviet Literary Gazette pg. 2. I learned that people say that Truman was in the Ku Klux Klan, but he denied. And if it wasn’t for Tom Pendergast, Truman wouldn’t have become president.”

“I did Memorandum, State Department Summary of Telegrams pg. 1 and 2. I learned about some military plans for China, Ruhr and Vatican City on the first page, then USSR, and Belgium on the second.”

“I did Superintendent M. Friedman, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to J.J. Duncan. pg.2. The paper shows that it was thin because the ink got through.”

“I did Superintendent J.F. House to J.J. Duncan. pg 2 and 3. I learned that J. F. House wanted to have a conference for ideas of making the new school.”

 

Yongfen Chen transcribed 6 documents: Memorandum, State Department Summary of Telegrams 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

“I learned that the USSR owns some part of land in eastern Germany.”

“I learned that Ambassador Jessup was in a Paris meeting.”
