Greater Princeton AYLUS Promotes Youth Volunteerism at Chess Classes & Tournaments (66th) in March 2022

The Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) Sports Committee promotes youth volunteerism while continuing tournaments and a chess schedule with classes (Must-know: Midgame) in 2022. Before class, GPA gives a quick presentation about what AYLUS is and what we do for the community at AYLUS to the students.

We are holding a class where students learn many different middle game techniques. Eager chess players meet every week for a training camp to sharpen their mind in creativity and thinking in endgames. This week, we looked at a famous middle game position played by 2 grandmasters. Everyone had fun learning about theoretical middle game techniques, and enjoyed challenging their minds with hard puzzles.

On March 6th, 2022, the GPA Chess Club hosted its twentieth tournament fundraiser. With more people joining the ABC Chess Club, even more kids have the opportunity to play quality chess against other curious learners.

With the tournament starting, over 90 people joined the club to compete in this week’s tournament. Before the tournament started, there was an informational meeting held on zoom to discuss the rules about the tournament and to introduce AYLUS to the participants that are not familiar with the organization, along with mentioning how to donate to help the community.

The tournament started at 7:00 PM EST with many participants, in an 1 hour arena style tournament. Many intense games were played with many close games. When the tournament concluded, “wychen” (4 wins, 0 loss, 0 draw) got first place with 13 points followed by “dp-panda” (4 wins, 1 loss, 0 draw) came in second place with 11 points and “cookiemonster1101” (2 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw) closely following with 5 points and claiming third place. Everyone had fun during this tournament and got the chance to play against a variety of different opponents with different skill levels.

GPA Chess Club’s next tournament will be hosted on Saturday, April 2th, starting at 7PM EST. The time control will remain the same (G10+5) and everyone is welcome. All ages can come and compete with their skills and have fun playing games of chess.

GPA Volunteers: Sarah Yan (3/6, 2 hrs; Tournament Flier, 2 hrs), Erick Yan (3/6, 2 hrs), George Chen (3/6, 2 hrs).
