On 12/6/2020, five members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang, Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
The lesson consisted of three parts: Reading, Writing and Speaking.
In class, tutor Leo Cheng taught the reading portion of the English class. The passage was continued with one group, the other group wish finished the passage the previous class was put in a different breakout room and was introduced a separate myth. The homework was 10 questions on the original myth.
Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the writing portion of AYLUS Syosset’s 17th online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors continued the past few eeek’s review and wrapped up their Introduction to Creative Writing unit. Then, students were given a variety of ambiguous photos and asked to create their own stories and settings based on them. Lastly, students were asked for their opinions on the class so far and what they would like to continue learning. The class was instructed in English to immerse the students in an English environment.
Today in class we watched two videos and had the students talk about their thoughts and answer questions to the video. The first video was the same Chinese movie with subtitles as last time from 11/29/20. The next video was a video without any dialogue. It depicted the story about an elderly couple who are in a hospital with their nurses. The nurses also love each other but this isn’t found out until the end and couldn’t have happened without the elderly couple. This video was meant for the students to interpret and to promote speaking about ones own thoughts.
