Greater Princeton AYLUS Teamed up to Tutor Kids Reading and Writing (5th) on July 24, 2020

On July 24, 2020, student members of the Greater Princeton Branch of AYLUS (GPA) teamed up and taught kids in the subjects of reading and writing.

The 1.5-hour class offered by GPA members Karen Yang and Kathy Yang teach 5 middle schoolers, Aria, Claire, Victor, Meisu, and Helen, on reading and writing. Class times have changed to Fridays from 2-3:30. This week was about Angel Island, an immigration center on the port of San Francisco. The kids began with a warm up writing sample by responding to the prompt “There’s an intruder in the house, so Kevin is scared” using Show and Not Tell techniques I taught last class. Then, we taught them a lesson with Google Slides, videos, readings and photos on Angel Island’s origins, Angel Island vs. Ellis Island, the conditions on Angel Island, the people on Angel Island and what the people did to cope with their trauma. The kids also got a chance to read poetry from Angel Island and their homework is to write a poem in a similar style. The kids also got to play a Quizzizz on today’s content that I made and had a lot of fun! We also elaborated on the book talks they have to do. Friday, next week, is our next class!

The 1-hour class offered by GPA members Abigail Bao, Angela Bao, and Olivia Mao teach a few elementary school students in Princeton. The students shared the stories they wrote with the members. The members enjoy their fantastic stories while help them fix grammar.

Anthony F Yang did 2 hours of Community Service through the preparation and class of tutoring third graders(Aimee Zhang, Mulan Yang, Nico Fischer, Dayna Li) reading and writing.
